Jim, I don't believe you can or should try sanding a popcorn ceiling as it's too rough and you'll likely tear the paper on the underlying sheetrock which will then require a skim coat of mud which is what you're trying to avoid.

Instead of sanding, you need to gently scrape the popcorn off the ceiling. You'll need a putty knife and spray bottle. First spray the area (stick to what you can reach from the ladder, doing one side and then the other) with warm water to loosen the popcorn from the ceiling. Use the putty knife to scrape the popcorn off in strips. If the popcorn doesn't come off easily, spray more water as often, we need to spray down wallpaper 3 times to loosen up the adhesive.

This is an extremely messy job so you'll want to put down a drop cloth and tape it to the walls. You also need to remove ceiling fixtures and turn the power off as you will be working with water. Lastly, this technique only works when the popcorn ceiling has not been painted. The paint unfortunately, will prevent the water from being absorbed which is needed to remove the popcorn without tearing the paper.

Never done it but why couldn't you sand down a popcorn ceiling (if does not contain asbestos)? Messy but wouldn't this be potentially quicker and save time not having to mud, sand, and prime drywall?

Thanks

Banks, You have 2 choices for testing. I spoke with Bob Corsetti at Aspen Environmental Services (www.aspenenvironmentalservices.com) and he said the "do it yourself" kits are too expensive, so go with the experience of a lab technician. Bob said there are quite a few testing labs in NH, and you can drop off your samples (take 2). There is information at http://www.prolabinc.com/instructions/asbestos.html on how to do your sampling safely and I must emphasize you can't see what will hurt you. Drop your samples off at a local lab or mail them. Good luck
