Holiday Decorating with a Decorator

Written by: tinagleisner

When setting up holiday decorations, keep combustible materials away from open flamesEvery woman likes decorating their home and the holidays are especially fun, especially so when we’re able to pull lost treasures out of hiding, things we only get to enjoy during the holidays. As people are being more frugal this year, it’s an opportunity to learn to decorate with things you already own. Okay, maybe one new decorating piece each year … but I’d suggest you buy something you can use all year round.

Where does our decorating passion come from? Many of us got started when we were children, helping our parents get the house ready for the holidays. My mother did all the baking and cooking while my father was in charge of decorating the Christmas tree. I don’t actually remember decorating the house beyond plates of colorful cookies everywhere.

Getting Help Decorating

Most of us think decorating is something we should know how to do … even if we’ve never taken a course, read a book or learned from a relative or friend. In fact I never worked with a decorator until we put our Victorian home in Portsmouth, NH up for sale. This was my first introduction to an interior decorator, as she first helped me stage our home for sale. As the holiday arrived, she recommended and I agreed that the house needed to be decorated appropriately and when I saw the beautiful job, I asked her to come to my new home too.

Here are photos of the great done by Jennifer Myers Interiors, at my Victorian home. We were invited to participate in the Portsmouth Parent Education Partnership (PEP) Holiday Home Tour which offers everyone the opportunity to tour 8 beautiful homes decorated for the holidays.
